Honoring 20 Years of John C. Dunham’s Vision
2026 marks the 20th anniversary of our founder John C. Dunham’s passing, whose vision and generosity continue to shape the greater Aurora area. And yet his presence is felt every day—in every child learning to read, every person building toward a stronger future, every emerging nonprofit leader finding their way. His legacy isn’t a memory. It’s a living, growing force across the greater Aurora area.
The Man Behind the Mission
John C. Dunham grew up in Aurora, graduated from West Aurora High School, and went on to transform his father’s company, Equipto, into a globally recognized business. He was an entrepreneur and a manufacturer, but perhaps more than anything, he was a learner. John and his wife, Judy, traveled to Japan to study Just-in-time manufacturing when the concept was still new to American business. He brought those ideas home and put them to work, not just in his company but in the way he thought about community.
He mentored young people in business, finance, and manufacturing, teaching practical lessons about confidentiality, self-presentation, and the simple power of showing up on time. He understood that strong individuals build strong communities, and that knowledge and opportunity are the building blocks of both.
In 1996, as a tribute to the city that shaped him, John established the Dunham Fund, guided by a mission as clear and enduring as the man himself: to make the world a more comfortable, safer place for mankind to live and prosper.
“Make the world a more comfortable, safer place for mankind to live and prosper.”

From Vision to Impact: Nearly Two Decades of Grantmaking
The Foundation became active following John’s passing in 2006, with the first grants awarded in 2007. Rooted in a simple philanthropic trust, we have grown over time into a committed presence in the region — guided always by the belief that investing in community is work that is never finished.
The milestones tell a remarkable story:
5th Anniversary (2012): $12.5 million awarded across 97 grants.
10th Anniversary (2017): $31 million across 198 grants.
15th Anniversary (2022): $54 million reached 208 nonprofits through 675 grants.
20th Anniversary (2026): More than $65 million awarded to 253 nonprofit partners, with over 680 grants across three core priorities.
Those numbers represent real lives changed. Children in after-school programs are gaining confidence and skills. Adults completing workforce training that opens new doors. Neighborhoods strengthened by organizations that would not exist, or could not do what they do, without foundational support.
Investing Where It Matters
John believed deeply that education is where futures are built. The Dunham Foundation has honored that belief by funding innovative after-school programs, early childhood education, and bold new initiatives like the Ready for the Future grants. Nearly $2 million was invested in four Aurora-area organizations working to reimagine learning for today’s students.
He also believed in economic opportunity. A community thrives when its people have the skills and pathways to participate fully in its economy. The Foundation has supported workforce development programs, entrepreneurship initiatives, and the kinds of hands-on training that John himself valued throughout his career.
And he cared about community in the fullest sense. The Dunham Foundation has funded healthcare access, cultural programming, human services, and the community infrastructure that helps neighborhoods function and flourish.
Strengthening the Sector Itself
One of the Foundation’s most meaningful contributions goes beyond grant dollars. More than $1.2 million has been invested in nonprofit capacity building through expert-led professional development workshops, grant writer support, and the Nonprofit Leadership Certificate Program in partnership with Aurora University. A new grant opportunity encourages nonprofits to apply for funds to help strengthen the relationship-building and outreach efforts essential for long-term sustainability.
These initiatives reflect the qualities that John embraced through his years of mentoring: that investing in people and in their skills, their confidence, and their growth multiplies every other investment made. When nonprofit leaders are stronger, the organizations they lead are stronger. And when those organizations are stronger, the communities they serve are stronger.
A Living Tribute
This milestone is a moment for reflection and for recommitment. The Foundation remains dedicated to expanding educational access, stimulating economic vitality, and deepening community connections across the greater Aurora area.
John C. Dunham gave generously of his wealth, his time, and his belief in what Aurora could become. Twenty years later, that belief still holds true for children, for families, and for a region that continues to grow in the image of his vision.
